Giving underprivleged girls the opportunity to discover their voice
ABOUT US
VOICE (Voluntary Organization in Community Enterprises) was set up in 1991 to reach out to the neglected, vulnerable and deprived children of Mumbai. VOICE works with these children who live and work on the streets, railway stations and market places of the city. Our hope is that we improve quality of life. Despite the excellent work done at our Andheri facility, we began to recognize that for some street kids, especially the more vulnerable girls, the day centre was only a partial solution.
VOICE began with two people, Victor and Rajashri, teaching shoe-shine boys and girls begging at Ticket windows, run aways and abandoned at Mumbai’s busiest railway stations. Our operation and support network continued to grow, so we opened our Andheri centre which works with children who stay in the Andheri area of Mumbai. The centre current looks after 150 disadvantaged children.
Located in the countryside north of Mumbai, our sprawling, green campus provides our girls with space and freedom in a safe, nurturing environment since 2006. The home is designed to support and encourage them on their paths to a prosperous adulthood.
OUR GIRLS
Each of the girls in our home at Sanjivani have come to us from a disadvantaged background. Some have been orphaned, though others have been driven from their homes due to neglect, abuse, or extreme poverty.
Some simply had no-one else to look after them, and would have otherwise ended up having to fend for themselves. Girls can join us at any age in our curriculum, and most of our girls come from the District Palghar. We welcome them to join us at our sanctuary at Sanjivani to receive good food, support, company and the education they deserve.
Through our education and vocational programmes, our aim is to equip our girls to become self-sufficient members of society. Many of our current pupils are already preparing for careers as teachers, office staff and bakers.
OUR HOME
With our Sanjivani girl’s home, we have created a nurturing and safe environment for our girls to live in. Our sprawling green campus in Virar, on the outskirts of Mumbai, is the ideal location for the city’s disadvantaged girls to get the support they need. We have ample outdoor space for playing sports, games and gardening. We also have facilities for vocational training such as baking, screen printing, etc.
